V=Valve/Variable

T=Timing/Turbo

i=Intelligent/Injection/Induction

S=Sport

E=Electronic

C=Control

R=Racing

4x2 means that you have four wheels, two of which drive the vehicle. Of course, if one develops less traction than the other, the one with less traction will spin unless you have a locking differential of some sort (Positrac, lockers).

4x4 generally refers to a part time four wheel drive system. This part time system has different settings: 2wd (normal mode, see above), 4wd high and 4wd low. The four wheel drive settings lock the front and rear wheels together, giving a 50/50 total power split. Because there is no slippage in the transfer case, driving on wet or dry pavement can cause the case to bind, and eventually, break. Four wheel drive should only be used to drive in mud or snow on these vehicles. Some more modern vehicles also offer a full-time four wheel drive option between the 2wd and 4wd settings; this is usually just an open differential in the transfer case which allows slippage between the front and rear wheels so as not to cause damage. More modern designs incorporate a viscous coupling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscous_coupling_unit) in their full-time four wheel drive setting, thereby making it an AWD setting.

AWD, or All Wheel Drive, usually employs a transfer case without manual control, though some older models had a "four wheel lock" setting which locked a center differential, forcing a 50/50 front/rear torque split which carried the same inherent limitations as standard 4wd, and/or a four low lock setting, which is the same as on the part time four wheel drive system.

On modern AWD systems, there two different control systems used in the transfer case. The first is mechanical in the form of a viscous coupling, and the other is electronic.

The first generation of modern (late 1980s and early 1990s) AWD transfer cases used viscous couplings. In regular cruise mode, the power split between front/rear would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 30/70. If slippage was detected on either the front or rear wheels, the coupling would heat and lock the transfer case to 50/50, providing equal traction front and rear.

The latest versions have more radical cruising splits: Usually somewhere in the neighborhood of 1% torque in the front and 99% in the rear. When slippage is detected, solenoids activate and provide varying degrees of torque to the front. Often this is combined with traction control, where the computer uses the brakes independently to stop spinning wheels and apply torque to the wheel which needs it most.

EACV - Electronic Air Control Valve
